The fire protection district works in 24/48 shifts, meaning 24 hours on shift, 48 hours off shift. The three shifts are defined as Gold, Red, and Black in Huntley FPD.
Huntley, alongside surrounding districts, utilizes a 3 digit numbering structure to define the units in the district including the district a unit belongs to, the type of unit, and the response zone the unit is usually assigned to. This common numbering structure is crucial for interoperability purposes. The response zones are defined by station number, and will shift around in 2020 with the addition of Station 5 and the relocation of station 1. The Huntley units are defined below.
- 1st Number: Huntley numbers begin with 9, Crystal Lake numbers begin with 3, and Algonquin-LITH numbers begin with 1.
- 2nd Number: An administrative vehicle is defined as 3 or 0, an ambulance is defined as 5, an engine is defined as 4, and an truck is defined as 8.
- 3rd Number: The response zone. 1-4 in Huntley's case.
